Nadar was the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820–1910), a French photographer, caricaturist, writer, journalist and aeronaut. After working in writing, journalism and caricature, he became one of the prominent portrait photographers of 19th-century Paris. His work included portraits of major cultural figures of his time as well as experiments with artificial-light, underground and aerial photography. He established the Atelier Nadar in Paris and also became famous for his involvement in ballooning, notably with the giant balloon Le Géant.
